The Commons Community: Denise Boyer

Akron Civic Commons is highlighting the neighbors and partners that make our work in downtown Akron, Ohio & Erie Canal Park, and Summit Lake possible. This week, we’re highlighting Denise Boyer, a loving mother, Summit Metro Parks employee, and a proud community advocate.

Tell us a little about yourself
I married young right out of high school and though our marriage didn’t work out, we remained the best of friends for the betterment of our two children. Our daughter Nikki is a teacher in Early Childhood Education and holds her Master’s Degree in Special Education. Our son Charles is an Army Veteran and currently studying business management. Charles is the owner of Better Body Industries LLC and co-owner of Regenerative Self Care & Wellness Center. I also raised my cousins Michael, a hard-working family man, and Michelle, also a hard worker living in Youngstown. This is what I am most proud of. I am re-married to my life partner and best friend Mickey Lewis.

Can you tell us about your neighborhood?
I have worked several jobs throughout my adult life including Akron General Medical Center and Summit DD. Summit Metro Parks is my current and favorite job. When I was first hired, it brought me back to my old neighborhood at Summit Lake. In 1964, I lived on Sues Court, which was across the street from Thorton Park (with is now the main Post Office). I went to Leggett Elementary School and Thorton Junior High School. My mother worked for Community Action Agency (which is now Community Action Akron Summit) as a secretary. I was not allowed to go to Summit Lake then because I was too young. I am happy to be working in this community today. The community gardens throughout the neighborhood are encouraging this community to eat healthier. Lisa Nunn (Let’s Grow Akron) is doing an amazing job offering educational programs for adults and children.

What is your favorite thing to do in your community?
I enjoy riding my bike and walking along the Towpath to see what new plant, bug, or animal I will run into. I have to mention the new Summit Lake Nature Center that is on the towpath gives a great history of the area. The upper level offers a beautiful view of the lake and has all of the original oak molding and hardwood flooring. I sometimes park my car at the Reach Center and just look out over the lake. When the sun is glistening on the lake, it is beautiful and relaxing. I also enjoy going to concerts at Lock 3 behind Callis Towers (Ohio & Erie Canal Park Concert Series). I enjoy plays and concerts at the Akron Civic Theatre.

How has Akron Civic Commons impacted your neighborhood along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail?
Besides making the neighborhood beautiful and resourceful, it is opening up communities and helping to break down some racial barriers. In the three years that I have worked in the Summit Lake community, I have witnessed a change in the diversity of people visiting the area. I feel that the entire Civic Commons team is working to make our city a better place for all people.
