Meet Grace Hudson

Akron Civic Commons is highlighting the neighbors and partners that make our work in downtown Akron, Ohio & Erie Canal Park, and Summit Lake possible. This week, we’re highlighting Grace Hudson, a longtime resident of the Summit Lake neighborhood, Chair of Summit Lake Community Development Corporation, and Member of AMHA Neighborhood Choice Task Force.

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and the Summit Lake Neighborhood?
I’m a transplant to Ohio. Originally, I’m from North Carolina and moved up here in 1971. After some time in college and the military, I landed in Akron for good in my 20’s. I’ve lived in Summit Lake for about 15-years and fell in love with the neighborhood from the moment I arrived.”

Can you tell us a little about your involvement with the Akron Civic Commons?
”This area has a history of things being done to them rather than with them. I got involved with the Akron Civic Commons because I liked what they stood for and what they were trying to do. They really listened to the residents and valued the resident input. "

Why do you think the Akron Civic Commons’ projects here in Summit Lake have been so successful?
"Everything here is a result of us asking and receiving. Because residents asked for this, the neighborhood as a whole developed a sense of pride and sense of ownership for the space."

What would you like to see for the future of the Summit Lake Neighborhood?
"My hope for the future would be some economic development. There is no where to get gas, nowhere to get a cup of coffee, nowhere to grab a sandwich."

What would you like people to know about the Summit Lake Community?
"This is a good area to live in. There is no more crime here than any other part of the city. There are a lot of good people in this neighborhood that deserve a chance for good housing and amenities."
